Back up your iPhone to keep your data safe

Back up your iPhone

Ever wondered how to back up your iPhone and why you should do it? Backing up is an easy operation that can save you a lot of trouble. This article will provide you with the basic concepts and procedures to back up your iPhone.

What is backup?

Backing up is a simple task that consists in copying your valuable data in some other locations to keep them safe.

Why should I back up my iPhone?

Imagine that your phone gets stolen, broken or you lose it. If you haven’t backed it up, you may lose with it your contacts, pictures, messages and other valuable information. Since backing up your iPhone is a simple and automated operation, as I will show you in a few lines, it is really a good idea to do it.

How to back up your iPhone

There are two ways to perform a full backup of your phone. You can back it up on your computer or with iCloud. Backing up with your computer doesn’t have the storage limitation of 5 GB which is applied to free iCloud plans, and you don’t need an Internet connection. On the other side, backing up with iCloud is very convenient, since you don’t need your computer to be with you and turned on. In addition, it is much less likely to loose a backup copy stored in the cloud than in your drive.

Back up on a computer using iTunes

  1. If you don’t have iTunes installed on your computer you can download it form here. To perform a backup, just open iTunes and connect your iPhone to the computer with the usb cable.
  2. Click on the iPhone icon. iTunes main window crop

Hint: you can check the option Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi so that you don’t have to connect it with a cable. This will work only if the computer and the iPhone are connected to the same network.

Back up with iCloud

  1. Go to your iPhone settings and tap iCloud.
  2. Tap Backup and turn on iCloud Backup.
  3. If you want to back up your data now, tap Back Up Now.iPhone Backup screen

This way your phone will automatically back up when plugged in, locked and connected to Wi-Fi. Note that your phone will never use cellular data for backups.

Follow the steps below if you want to exclude some applications that are backed up separately or are cloud based (data stored online thus already protected).

  1. Go to your iPhone settings and tap iCloud.
  2. Tap Storage and then Manage Storage.
  3. Select your iPhone and choose what to back up.

How can I backup my pictures?

Rather often pictures are among the largest although very valuable files. For this reason they need special attention, particularly when using iCloud backup. Indeed, the 5 GB available with the free plan will tend to saturate quite soon.

The best thing you can do if you do not wish to pay for additional storage, is to use a third-party application to perform this task. For example, Google Photos gives you the possibility to back up unlimited number of pictures with unnoticeable loss of quality for up to 16 megapixels, or 15 GB backing up the original files. Other services that allow you to back up your camera roll are OneDrive from Microsoft, Flickr (Yahoo) and Dropbox. You can configure these apps once, then they will take care of your pictures in the background, not requiring further attention. By using these services you also have quick access to your photos from your computer or any device connected to the Internet.

Which one is the best?

It quite depends on your needs and preferences, but as a general recommendation I find it really convenient to use a combination of a dedicated app for your pictures and iCloud set to handle those other data you care about.
